Small Scaffold update for Vimeo

Just a short note for any Scaffold users out there; There’s a small update that’s just gone live which fixes the layout of Vimeo embeds using their fancy new ‘embedinator’ script. It fixes new embeds, and also makes use of Matthew Buchanan’s updated script to upgrade older embeds to the new format. If you haven’t changed the theme HTML the fix will be rolled out to you automagically, otherwise you can update manually. More updates are on the way :)

Fixing the background 'bleed'

I recently came up against an issue in Safari where the background colour of an element seemed to ‘bleed’ through the edge of the corners when applying both borders and a border-radius (see the image above). After seeing David Cole tweet about the same issue I resolved to find a solution, and it came in the form of the -webkit-background-clip property.

-webkit-background-clip: padding-box;

It’s important to note that if you are using the shorthand notation to specify your other background properties then this should be added after those. It seems that the shorthand notation implies a default clip value which will override one that’s previously set. Your mileage may vary, but it worked a treat for me. Scaffold update released

It’s been a little while coming, but the latest Scaffold theme update has finally been released. A full list of updates is available on the Scaffold site, but they include:

an optional single-column layout
an option to show your ‘liked’ posts
the ability to manually specify album art
Facebook ‘Like’ button
lightboxing for images that don’t have a click-through URL
a new optional ‘slim’ audio player

A few of the new features are highlighted below.

Single column layout

This has been a popular request, so I’m happy to announce the inclusion of an optional single-column layout for main pages, following the design of the existing individual post pages.

Slim audio player

A late addition to the update, this ‘slim’ version of the audio player sits along the top of posts rather than beside them.

The slim player is great if you tend to post a lot of text with your audio posts, as it doesn’t reduce the size of the text area in double-column layouts. This version of the player is an optional setting, with the existing player being used by default.

Showing ‘Likes’

A number of people asked for the ability to show your recently ‘liked’ posts, so this is now an option also. When selected, your latest four ‘liked’ posts will display along the bottom of index pages, along with a title (that can be customised) and a link to see more via the standard Tumblr interface.

Facebook ‘Like’ button

A lot of requests were made for the addition of the FB Like button, so this is now included in the theme. However, it is only currently available in all views except the double-column view. This will be rectified shortly but requires a larger change to the way the footer section of these panels is coded, something which the current update lays some of the groundwork for (it also paves the way for being able to display tags, another feature a lot of people request).

If you already have the Scaffold theme, and haven’t made any changes to the theme HTML, then you will get the update automatically. For those that have made changes, see the Updates page for details on how to get the latest version.

Search and tag filtering are a really important part of the discovery process. I know the Tumblr staff are looking into this, so I hope a fix comes soon.

One of two new premium themes from Matthew Buchanan, Solaris implements nearly every Tumblr feature imaginable. Custom header graphics, author credit for group blogs, recent tweets, Disqus comments, custom colors, and shared Likes, are all painless to set up.

Seriously nice work from Matthew on his Solaris theme, and a complete steal for only $9.
